MASSAGE THERAPY FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease that affects the central nervous system of over 2.3 million people. Common symptoms include chronic fatigue, visual disturbances, altered sensation and difficulties with mobility.

Although treatment is frequently sought through medications, massage therapy is a commonly used complementary and alternative to medicinal treatments. In a 2014 research study by Brittany Schroeder and colleagues found that massage therapy (Swedish in particular) can help those with severe MS with better walking distances. Some subjects from the 24 Canadian group of individuals even slept better.

Visit www.nationalmssociety.org to learn more about the disease.

WHY EXFOLIATE?

Exfoliation, by definition, is the removal of dead skin cells. Our skin naturally sheds dead skin, however, exfoliation speeds up that process, helping to prevent common annoyances and issues like pimples and blackheads because it keeps the skin clear of any impurities. When pores and sebaceous glands are blocked by dead skin cells, the buildup can lead to the development of blemishes.

Exfoliation can be done by three different methods.

  1. Using tools for scrubbing like a loofah or washcloth

  2. Using a product that has abrasive particles like a walnut facial scrub

  3. Using a product that contains gentle exfoliating acids like alpha-hydroxy, beta-hydroxy, or salicyclic acids.

Options one and two are much more abrasive on the skin, while option three reacts chemically with dead skin cells.

It is best to trust a trained skin care professional to give your skin what it needs. Our estheticians ask you the right questions to help them (and you) learn about your skin, what processes and product(s) will be best for you, and how you can keep your skin looking and feeling refreshed!
